No–there is no typo in the subheading. In fact as a proof, here it is again—lose weight by gaining fat! And no, I am not out of my mind. In fact, I have proof to back it up. I’ll even throw in a fancy school to boost my credibility—Harvard Medical School. Researchers there are developing a drug to treat obesity. And what can this drug do? It encourages brown fat production!
I know, I know, it is difficult to get excited especially when you are probably not aware what brown fats are and what they do. Brown fats are tissues that are important for heat production. They are often called baby fats. To be able to generate heat, they consume or burn calories. Now, I’m hearing some—ahhhs. And hear this, research also shows that brown fats helps burn white fats. This calorie-burning tissue may just be the answer to the ever increasing cases of obesity.
Eliminate Cellulite And Stretch Marks
It is only recently that they are able to discover traces of brown fats in adults. Harvard researchers are hoping to take advantage of these traces by creating a drug that will encourage production or increase of brown fats. So far, they have already isolated a protein that may be capable of producing more of these brown fats and also converting white fats to brown fats.
Go to Alaska and Lose Weight
Okay—it doesn’t really have to be Alaska. It was the first thing that I thought of after reading an article that stated—people exposed to cold temperature may trigger their brown fats to produce body heat. More activity done by the brown fats, the more calories are burned. In fact, it was estimated that by prompting the body to generate heat—process often referred to as thermogenesis—people can burn as much as 5 to 10% additional calories! And you know what happens when calories are burned—you lose weight!
Do not, however, get too excited and sell all your belongings to move to a country with a colder climate. Even if there are some data linking leanness to cold climate, losing weight is not as simple as purchasing a plane ticket to Alaska and living there. One of the reasons why it may not be that easy is–people in colder climates tend to eat more. Also, the question–how cold is cold?—when it comes to the temperature to activate the brown fats is still unclear. What is also inconclusive is the length of time a person has to be subjected to a cold temperature before the brown fats start working in full gear.
Lose Weight by Visiting Netherlands
Yes, I am officially running out of subheadings. But don’t be too quick to roll your eyes. Visiting Netherlands may not be a smart idea especially when you’re on a tight budget. However, what you can do though is listen to what a biology professor from Maastricht University Medical Centre in the Netherlands– Wouter van Marken Lichtenbelt—has to say. For years now, he has been studying the technology of using cold temperature to increase heat production. The operative word is—for years. This makes him a subject expert.
As much as he believes temperature may have an effect on weight loss, he also stresses the importance of portion control. To him eating in moderation is still the key. As much as you freeze your tush to death, if you still over eat, it is not going to work.
In a few years time, with ongoing researches, we may be able to see a new approach in treating obesity. It will not aim to replace diet and exercise. Instead it may just be the missing piece in the lose weight puzzle.
